Description

Bright Lights in A Dark City is based on the idea of removing all artificial light from a metropolitan city to reveal the true beauty of the night sky. The piece tells the story of a city going to sleep as stars begin to awaken and populate the darkness. The ethereal atmosphere created by the frequent use of chords built upon fifths and seconds helps to give the pieces a lonely mood in the beginning. As the piece goes along, the rhythmic movement increases as the half notes and quarter notes slowly morph into sixteenths. This culminates in a flurry of rapidly accelerating sixteenth notes to represent the overwhelming number of stars that truly rest in the sky, gone unseen on an average night. The piece ends with a shift from the night to morning, while longingly playing reused material in remembrance.
